Faith In
What do we put our faith in? Who do we put our faith in? Jesus gave us a good
starting point:
Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
John 14:1 (NIV)
Faith in The Lord Your God
In the old covenant, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, encouraged the people:
"Listen to me, Judah and people of Jerusalem! Have faith in the Lord
your God and you will be upheld;" 2 Chronicles 20:20 (NIV)
The Lord your God is Jehovah. Jehovah is "The Lord." Many times,
however, Jehovah is part of a compound name, which specifically describes an
aspect of "The Lord your God."
- Jehovah Rapha - The Lord Who Heals You
- Jehovah Shalom - The Lord Our Peace
- Jehovah Tsidkenu - The Lord Our Righteousness
- Jehovah Shammah - The Lord is There
- Jehovah Nissi - The Lord Our Banner
- Jehovah Jireh - The Lord Will Provide
- Jehovah Raah - The Lord My Shepherd
Knowing the name of the Lord your God focuses faith towards the answer.
Here are some additional selections about faith in God: Mark 11:22, Acts
27:25, 1 Thessalonians 1:4, and Hebrews 6:1
Faith in His Prophets
Jehoshaphat continued:
"have faith in his prophets and you will be successful." 2
Chronicles 20:20 (NIV)
In the old covenant, God anointed men to serve his people as prophets,
priests, and kings. In the new covenant, Jesus has set apostles, prophets,
evangelists, pastors, and teachers to prepare and equip his people.
We are to have faith in those God has called and anointed. Faith in the
anointing of God upon these men. God chose to work through men. If we look upon
the failings, inconsistencies of men, we will lose faith. If we are fixed upon
the anointing of God, we'll have faith in his prophets and be successful.
Faith in Jesus
Jesus is our example of living in the faith class. He lived to please the
Father. He set aside his own will to do the Father's will.
Jesus said that we should have faith in him. Paul taught us to have faith in
the Lord Jesus, Christ Jesus [Christ means the Anointed], Jesus, and the Son of
God.
Faith in His Name
After Jesus returned to God, the Father, in heaven, the Holy Spirit came and
filled the believers with power. Jesus promised believers would do the works he
did, and even greater works. Peter and John, apostles of Jesus, met a crippled
man, a beggar. The man asked for money, but Peter, full of the power of the Holy
Spirit and faith, ministered healing instead. Crowds gathered when they heard of
the great miracle, and Peter explained to them the power of faith:
When Peter saw this, he said to them: "Men of Israel, why does this
surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had
made this man walk? Acts 3:12 (NIV)
By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made
strong. It is Jesus name and the faith that comes through him that has given
this complete healing to him, as you can all see. Acts 3:16 (NIV)
Faith in His Blood
God presented him [Jesus] as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in
his blood. Rom 3:25 (NIV)
When Adam and Eve sinned, God covered their nakedness - the sign of the sin
and separation from the glory of God - by shedding the blood of an animal, and
using the skin. In the Old Testament Law, animals were sacrificed to atone for,
or cover, man's sin. The sacrifices were made every year. The blood of animals
made the believer outwardly clean.
In the New Testament, or New Covenant, we have the blood of the perfect
sacrifice - Jesus. Jesus never committed sin, but became sin for us. His blood
obtained eternal redemption (see Hebrews 9:12). The blood of Jesus doesn't
cover, but actually takes away the sin - forever.
Faith in the Power of God
...having been buried with him [Jesus] in baptism and raised with him
through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. Col
2:12 (NIV)
The power of God is life giving power. It is the power over death. It is the
power to heal, deliver, set free, save. It is the power that created every
living creature, every atom in the universe just by speaking.
We can have faith in the power of God. There is no stronger power in
existence!
