Profession of Faith

Wherefore, Holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus. Hebrews 3:1 (KJV)

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession. 1 Timothy 6:12-13 (KJV)

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. Hebrews 4:14 (KJV)

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) Hebrews 10:23 (KJV)

Our profession of faith is "saying the same thing as God." That's what Jesus did. Jesus only said what he heard the Father say. He said "I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me." (John 8:28)

Before Pilate, Jesus made the good confession:

"You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." John 18:37 (NIV)

Now we can make our good confession:

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 (NIV)

This is a good confession because we say what God says. We don't say what we think, feel, or dread. It's good because we receive forgiveness, purification, and righteousness. We can follow this with another good confession:

God made him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

For just as through the disobedience of the one man [Adam] many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man [Jesus] the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19 (NIV)

A bad confession is saying something contrary to God's Word - contrary to the truth.

  • I'm just a sinner.
  • I'm no good. Nothing I do ever works.
  • I'm sick and tired.
  • It will be death of me.

Who wants that? Not me!

Once we make our good confession, we must hold fast to it. Hold onto it as tight as you would to the winning ticket in a billion dollar lottery. Hold to your confession no matter what you feel, see, or think. No matter what others say, or what the situation seems.

Practice

I have everything God's says I have.

I can do everything God says I can do.

I am everything God says I am.

Hint
To profess and to confess mean the same thing.

Confession has a negative connotation because of religious traditions. We "confess our sins."

God's Word tells us to not only confess our sins, but to also confess, or profess, our faith! Once we confess our sins, they're forgiven. We're free to move into the positive.

The Greek word profess means "to say the same thing." Our profession of faith is saying the same thing as God.
