Name of Jesus
The name Jesus is the English translation of the Hebrew name Yeshua - Jehovah
is Salvation.
Yeshua - Jehovah is Salvation
In God's Word, names are very important. A person's name often conveys their
character, and their purpose. A name is still used to identify a person's
character. For example, we trust someone with a good name.
The Son of God's name identifies His character and purpose. Jesus is the Son
of God - pure, holy and sinless. No other name identifies a man with the
character of Jehovah.
Jesus name also identifies His purpose: Salvation. Jesus came to save man
from his sin. He came to break the power of sin and death. He came to restore
the relationship between the holy God and His creation.
Salvation is an interesting word. It has a spiritual aspect, and a physical
aspect. Salvation affects us in the present, and in the future. It impacts the
physical, material world, and the spiritual world. The Greek word sozo means to
save:
of material and temporal deliverance from danger, suffering, etc.
- to preserve
- to save from sickness (to heal)
- to make whole
- of the spiritual and eternal salvation granted immediately by God to those
who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
- of the present experience of God's power to deliver from the bondage of
sin
- to keep safe
- to guard
When you believe in Jesus, you receive God's deliverance from sin and death,
and receive protection and safety. You're restored and made whole, healed.
No wonder why the letter to the Hebrews refers to so great a salvation.
Name = Authority
As a believer, we have the right to act and speak in Jesus name. This is a
legal right to exercise authority on Jesus behalf. In our legal system, a person
can extend the right to act on their behalf to another person. In foreign
affairs, the ambassador speaks for the government of his country. The ambassador
can speak for the president - with his authority. Believers in Jesus are His
ambassadors!
We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal
through us. 2 Corinthians 5:20 (NIV)
Here's what we can do in Jesus name:
"Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever
believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be
condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe:
In my name
they will drive out demons;
they will speak in new tongues;
they will pick up snakes in their hands;
and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all;
they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.
Mark 16:15-18 (NIV)
Peter and John knew this. Look what they did:
One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer--at
three in the afternoon. Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the
temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going
into the temple courts. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them
for money. Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said,
"Look at us!" So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get
something from them.
Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give
you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." Taking him by the
right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became
strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Acts 3:1-8 (NIV)
Later Peter explained this miracle:
"Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if
by our own power or godliness we have made this man walk?"
"By faith in the name of Jesus this man whom you see and know was made
strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given
this complete healing to him, as you all can see." Acts 3:12, 16 (NIV)
Paul knew his authority, too. After surviving a shipwreck, Paul was on the
island of Malta:
Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper,
driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. When the islanders saw the
snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, "This man must be a
murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to
live." But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill
effects. Acts 28:3-5 (NIV)
